Cinnamon Churros Recipe

Blogging has given me so much. To say that it has been a great journey would be an understatement. It has opened so many channels for me. I have had most fun trying new recipes, learning food photography and just being a part of this amazing blogging community. I have met a lot of like minded foodies in the last 2 years and have developed a friendship with several of them. To be honest, I didn’t know that friendship also came as a part of blogging! BONUS!

It’s amazing how encouraging, helpful and tightly knit this blogging community is. I love how everyone’s always celebrating each other’s success, honestly it’s what keeps a lot of us going. I am so excited to be sharing today’s post with you guys because today we are celebrating our dear friend David (from Spiced Blog) and his wife Laura’s baby shower! They are having a baby boy! Yieee I am so excited. It was hard to keep a secret but I can say it now SURPRISE David! Happy Virtual Baby Shower!

Davids Virtual Baby Shower-nocwm

I met David (virtually of course) at the beginning of this year and since then I have been hooked onto his blog. Not only is David a wonderful baker, cook but also an amazing writer. His blog is one of the first I read every morning with my morning chai. Other than the fact that we both love to bake, we also share the love for cinnamon. So when Chris from Shared Appetite contacted me for this baby shower, I knew what I was making. It had to be something with cinnamon.

The question was what?!! I know that David loves cinnamon but there were so many things to cook/bake and 1000 ideas were churning in my head. I finally decided to go ahead with cinnamon churros with chocolate dipping sauce. Have you guys ever had churros? If you live in the US and go to fairs, then you most probably would have tasted these delicious snack. Churros are nothing but fried pastry dough, they are popular in countries like Spain, Mexico, Portugal. The dough is basically choux pastry, while making this dough I was reminded of my French pastry class!

Homemade Churros

The way I like and want my churros to be – crisp from outside and light/airy from inside and I have to say I achieved just that with this recipe. Churros are served with chocolate dipping sauce and you cannot skip it. Yes I insist you don’t skip the sauce. Churros are great as such but they become absolutely wonderful when you roll them in cinnamon sugar, I am sure David would agree?!

David and Laura, I wish you guys all the best! I hope you enjoy my recipe and all others as well! We are all so happy for you and so excited for this virtual baby shower. I hope that the little one fills your life with immeasurable happiness. Here’s to good times!

Cinnamon Churros

Method

To a pan add butter, water, salt, sugar and vanilla extract.

Let the butter melt and mixture come to a boil.

Remove the pan from heat, add flour and baking powder, stirring continuously.

Cinnamon Churros Recipe-Step-1

Mix till it forms a smooth dough. Let the dough cool down for 2-3 minutes, add then add the egg yolk.

Mix using a spatula till well combined. If your dough isn’t looking smooth, smear your hands or spatula with little oil and give a quick knead. It will be smooth.

Heat enough oil in a pan on medium heat. Transfer dough to a pastry bag fitted with french star tip. This is what is commonly used while making churros but you can obviously use any tip. Once the oil is hot, squeeze the dough into the hot oil directly. I kept my churros small so squeeze accordingly. [Be very careful while doing this step, the oil is hot!]

Cinnamon Churros Recipe-Step-2

Once you are sure you have squeezed out the required length of the dough, cut it using a scissor.

Deep fry the churros in the hot oil till they turn golden brown in color.

In a plate mix together sugar and cinnamon powder. Roll the fried churros immediately in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Cinnamon Churros Recipe-Step-3

To make the chocolate sauce, heat cream, milk and chocolate chips in a pan. Whisk till combined.

Add dark chocolate and mix till the chocolate melts.

Add cinnamon powder, orange zest and mix.

Cinnamon Churros Recipe-Step-4

Serve the cinnamon churros immediately with chocolate dipping sauce!

Cinnamon Churros Recipe

* Churros taste best when served immediately. They are crisp and perfect then. I highly recommend serving them immediately.

* I have used dark chocolate in my sauce and this sauce wasn’t too sweet. For a sweeter sauce, use milk chocolate or add sugar to the sauce.

  1. Hi Manali,

I love your recipes. I have been trying different dishes. I just came across this which I want to try making! Can I skip the eggs for this recipe or what can be the alternate ingredient to replace the egg? Thank you!

    1. Hello! I have not made choux pastry without eggs so really can’t say how this will work without eggs. It will be better to google a eggless choux pastry recipe and try that 🙂 sorry about that.

  2. These churros… they are a thing of beauty!!! LOVE! Screw going to a fair for churros… I want you to come over and make me a big batch to inhale! Thanks so much for bringing such a great recipe to the party!

  3. I love churros! Specially the Spanish type, they aren’t covered in sugar but they are dipped in a very thick and sweet chocolate, just like yours. I have never made churros, this looks like a good recipe to start.

      1. no, won’t be same. This is a classic Pâte à Choux recipe which must have eggs. I have not made choux pastry without eggs, maybe I will try someday and share and then you can try that. For this recipe though, eggs can’t be replaced.

  22. Manali, I couldn’t agree more with you – this blogging community is one heck of an awesome one! And so are these churros! I’ve never attempted to make my own mostly because I assumed they were so hard – but you make them seem so easy to enjoy!
