Easy Vegan Tacos with Crispy Tofu and Avocado Lime Crema. These vegan and gluten-free tacos are easy to put together and make a great meal!
Tacos are some of my favorite things to make at home for a quick lunch. I love the fact that they are so versatile, easy to whip up, and there’s so much that you can fill them up with.
A good taco is all about using a good tortilla and one of my absolute favorites is Mission® Gluten Free Soft Taco Tortillas. Even though I am not gluten sensitive, I cook a lot of gluten-free meals. If you search my blog for gluten-free recipes, you will find a ton of them.
However, I was hesitant to make gluten-free tacos until I came across Mission Gluten Free Soft Taco Tortillas. I always had this misconception that if I want to eat gluten-free tortillas, I will have to compromise on the flavors, but not anymore! The fact that these soft tortillas taste like a normal tortilla without sacrificing on the flavor makes them a winner!
These are so versatile, taste great, and stay soft, which makes them ideal for creating wonderful tacos year round. Mission Gluten Free Soft Taco Tortillas have no trans-fat, no cholesterol, no artificial color or flavors and have 5-gram dietary fiber per serving. They are available in the gluten free section of your local grocery store, nationwide! Visit Mission for a store locator and to check out more recipes.
Last week I had a few friends up for a taco night and a couple of them happened to be gluten intolerant. So, I decided to make these Vegan Crispy Tofu Tacos using the Mission Gluten Free Soft Taco Tortillas and they turned out amazing!
It’s a super simple recipe and really easy to put together with few ingredients. I am not the biggest tofu fan around but I do like crispy tofu. And making them isn’t complicated at all. Here’s how you make them with minimal effort.
How to Make Crispy Tofu
Now, I know this can be little challenging. Here’s how to make crispy tofu quickly and without much effort.
1. Start with extra-firm tofu – if you use soft tofu, it would be very difficult to get it all crispy. So, use the extra-firm variety.
2. Press the tofu with a heavy object for 20-30 minutes to get rid of excess moisture. Once done, carefully dab any excess moisture with a kitchen towel.
3. Toss the tofu pieces with cornstarch. I think rice flour will also work though I have no tried it yet.
4. Cook with 1-2 tablespoons of oil on a non-stick pan until it’s golden and crisp from all sides.
5. Eat it immediately. As with most crispy things, the tofu too won’t stay crispy for long. So, have everything else for the taco ready and once the tofu is done, simply add to the tacos and eat.
I like to have everything ready before I make the tofu. This way, I can top the tacos with crispy tofu at the end and then enjoy the tacos immediately.

Once your tacos are ready, you can go crazy with the toppings! Use as many as you like but my favorites ones with these crispy tofu tacos are cilantro, jalapeño, and lime wedges! If you want you can even add cheese, sour cream, pickled red onions, or even some sliced avocados would be good here.
I have often heard that vegetarian tacos don’t really match up to the meat ones in terms of taste and flavor and I politely disagree. I think it’s all about combining the right set of flavors and using fresh quality ingredients. I hope you guys enjoy these meatless tacos as much as we did.
Method
Press the extra-firm tofu with a heavy object for around 20 minutes to get rid of excess moisture.
1- Meanwhile make the avocado lime crema. In a food processor or blender, add avocado, cilantro, salt, black pepper and lime juice.
2- Pulse to combine everything together. Adjust the consistency of crema at this point. You may add couple of tablespoons of milk to dilute it. Set it aside.
3- Once 20 minutes are up, dab any excess moisture on the tofu with a kitchen towel and then cut it into cubes.
4- Transfer tofu cubes to a large bowl and toss with salt, black pepper, cumin powder and smoked paprika.
5- Add cornstarch to the bowl.
6- Toss to combine until the tofu cubes are well coated with the cornstarch.
7- Heat oil in a non-stick pan on medium heat. I used my well-seasoned cast iron pan. Once the oil is hot, place the tofu cubes in a single layer on the pan.
8- Cook the tofu turning sides, until crisp and golden brown from both the sides. This will take few minutes.
Warm the tortillas (best served warm) and then top with crispy tofu, shredded red cabbage, sliced jalapeños, cilantro, lime wedges and finally finish it off with a nice drizzle of the avocado lime crema. Enjoy!

Enjoyed the Avocado crema but… When I cut and tested a cube, the inside was tasteless, even though I let the seasoned cubes sit in the fridge for at least 3 hours. I even doubled the spices. I ended up breaking up the cubes in order to disperse the seasoning and flavors which helped a great deal.
I’d still eat this over beef or chicken any day!
glad you made it work in the end! You can always adjust spices to taste
So unique. Wish there were more in the same category, but this will do for now ^_^
